Should I use a transparent background?

For the main favicon.ico, transparent is usually best so it blends with light and dark browser themes. However, for apple-touch-icon (iOS), a solid background is required by Apple (black will be added if transparent). Our tool lets you choose a background color to fill the transparency if needed.
